Henry was not at all oblivious of the wake of wonderingejaculation that streamed out behind him. On other occasions he hadreaped this same joy, and he always had an eye for thedemonstration. With a face beaming with happiness he turned awayfrom the scene of his victories into a narrow side street, wherethe electric light still hung high, but only to exhibit a row oftumble-down houses leaning together like paralytics.

They were divided into parties over the worth of differentcompanies, and supported their creeds with no small violence. Forinstance, in that part of the little city where Number Four had itshome it would be most daring for a boy to contend the superiorityof any other company. Likewise, in another quarter, where a strangeboy was asked which fire company was the best in Whilomville, hewas expected to answer "Number One." Feuds, which the boys forgotand remembered according to chance or the importance of some recentevent, existed all through the town.

The light streamed after the swinging door, and disclosed a roomsix feet one way and six feet the other way. It was small enough toenable the radiance to lay it plain. Williams peered warily aroundthe corner made by the door-post.

Nevertheless her acquaintances, from the pain of their defeats, had been long in secret revolt. It was in no wise a conspiracy, because they did not care to state their open rebellion, butnevertheless it was understood that any woman who could notcoincide with one of Martha's contentions was entitled to thesupport of others in the small circle. It amounted to anarrangement by which all were required to disbelieve any theory forwhich Martha fought. This, however, did not prevent them fromspeaking of her mind with profound respect.

This challenge brought forth renewed taunts from the others. Thelarger boy puffed out his checks. "Well, I ain't afraid," heexplained, sullenly. He had made a mistake in diplomacy, and nowhis small enemies were tumbling his prestige all about his ears. They crowed like roosters and bleated like lambs, and made manyother noises which were supposed to bury him in ridicule anddishonor. "Well, I ain't afraid," he continued to explain throughthe din.

They did not heed his return. They were engaged in analtercation. It had evidently been planned that this battle wasbetween Indians and soldiers. The smaller and weaker boys had beeninduced to appear as Indians in the initial skirmish, but they werenow very sick of it, and were reluctantly but steadfastly, affirming their desire for a change of caste. The larger boys hadall won great distinction, devastating Indians materially, and theywished the war to go on as planned. They explained vociferouslythat it was proper for the soldiers always to thrash the Indians. The little boys did not pretend to deny the truth of this argument;they confined themselves to the simple statement that, in thatcase, they wished to be soldiers. Each little boy willinglyappealed to the others to remain Indians, but as for himself hereiterated his desire to enlist as a soldier. The larger boys werein despair over this dearth of enthusiasm in the small Indians. They alternately wheedled and bullied, but they could not persuadethe little boys, who were really suffering dreadful humiliationrather than submit to another onslaught of soldiers. They werecalled all the baby names that had the power of stinging deep intotheir pride, but they remained firm.

Rosemary Agneessens is a proven community organizer and leader. She joins Dan and Ed for a refreshing and much-needed discussion of where we are now and where we are going. The pandemic will pass. Many of the players at the state and national level will try the old way of holding power. They will face energized leaders who see a clear path to the future. Rosemary has stayed focused on the battlelines, cherishing small victories that open the paths for our students and help build our states and nation. She sees a time in the near future when those who want their children and communities to have great education programs will lead the politicians. A time when going hat-in-hand to beg legislatures for funds to a time when all understand that to have a great nation we must have great schools. What we are learning in states like Arizona, and what Rosemary shares, is vital information for leaders everywhere.

For thirty years, over this green uncrowded land, theWars of the Roses had been fought. But it had beenmore of a blood feud than a war. A Montague andCapulet affair; of no great concern to the averageEnglishman. No one pushed in at your door to demandwhether you were York or Lancaster and to hale you offto a concentration camp if your answer proved to be thewrong one for the occasion. It was a small concentratedwar; almost a private party. They fought a battle inyour lower meadow, and turned your kitchen into adressing-station, and then moved off somewhere or otherto fight a battle somewhere else, and a few weeks lateryou would hear what had happened at that battle, andyou would have a family row about the result becauseyour wife was probably Lancaster and you were perhapsYork, and it was all rather like following rival footballteams. No one persecuted you for being a Lancastrian ora Yorkist, any more than you would be persecuted forbeing an Arsenal fan or a Chelsea follower.

For another hour he watched the lamp-pattern on theceiling, going over the thing in his mind; going roundand round it looking for some small crack that mightindicate a way into the heart of the matter. 2ff7e9595c
